Crash Dieting

affects of crash dieting -- effects of foods

Dear Diet Tip,

What advice do you have on crash dieting. I need to lose 40 pounds quickly. If I don't make an all-out effort to lose weight, it won't happen. I know crash diets are bad from a nutritional standpoint, but I think it's the only way I can lose weight and lose it quickly. What do you think the best way to lose 40 pounds quickly? Your advice would greatly help.

  ~~ Karen

Dear Karen,

Your hunch is right. Crash dieting is not the way to lose weight. Most people can only stay on a crash diet for a few days and then their hunger get's out of control, they binge ......  diet over.   Others are able to lose weight but gain it all back in a very short period of time.

The affects of crash dieting are:

  • over-eating
  • fatigue
  • disappointment
  • constant  hunger
  • slow metabolism

One of the worst effect of crash dieting is that it slows down your metabolism. Any time daily calorie consumption is drastically reduced, the body will slow it's metabolism to match the calories eaten. This is a survival instinct of the body to stay alive in times of famine. It doesn't know that you are trying to lose 40 pounds quickly.

Instead of a crash diet, eat 5 to 6 times each day. Stay between 1200 and 1400 calories per day and eat every 2 or 3 hours. This will keep your body fueled and cause you to burn more calories. You can expect to lose between 1 and 2 pounds per week. A slow and gradual approach is the best way to lose weight and not quick fix methods that harm your body.
