High Fiber Diet

 

Dear Diet Tip,

I'm trying to stick to a high fiber diet. I realize that this type of diet will give me better elimination and help reduce my cholesterol. I'm already sold on the merits of a high fiber diet but what foods can I eat that are high fiber?

Dear Melody,

Good for you. A high fiber diet tends to be naturally low in fat, include very healthy foods and will help you lose weight. Just remember to manage your overall calories. Try to stay within 1200 to 1400 calories per day and get regular exercise.

Some of the foods you can eat that are naturally high in fiber are:

  • Most vegetables - squash, carrots, cabbage, beets, spinach or greens, broccoli, peas
     

  • Most fruits - strawberries, oranges, grapefruit, apples, melons
     

  • Grains - Wheat, barley, oats, rice, rye also found in bread, beans and pasta. Eat whole grain foods. Many brand label foods are bleached and over-processed, which strips the fiber out of the foods.
     

  • Soy products, such as soy nuts or soy flower
